About the Maker

Lucy Joines first learnt to throw in Japan in 1996 when she was awarded the ‘Ferdinand Zweig Memorial Scholarship’ during her Ba Hons Degree in Ceramics at Falmouth College of Arts. Lucy studied Japanese ceramics at Joetsu University in Nigatta, she has been inspired by Japanese ceramics ever since. Lucy spent 16 years as a Art & Ceramics teacher. She now makes ceramics and paints in her studio in Mount Hawke.

Process

Lucy Joines creates hand thrown ceramics using a local stoneware clay. Lucy then decorates each work using underglazes and gold lustre to create plants, flowers and wildlife designs to express her passion for the magical natural world of Cornwall and where she grew up on a farm in North Devon. Lucy is inspired by Kit Williams and his book 'Masquerade,' this can be seen through her regular use of hares in her work.
